About

Alom pic2 170 px.jpgAs you’ve probably gathered, I’m a professional science geek. These are some of the things you can hire me to do:

I have a degree in Physics and an MSc. in Science Communcation. In no particular order, my work experience includes:

Science Teacher (specialist subject Physics). I teach KS3 through to A-level. Amongst other extra-curricular activities, I have run Science Clubs and edited a student produced science magazine.

Working in TV (for companies including the BBC, Lion TV, Pioneer Productions and Brook Lapping Education) in various roles from researcher through to producer / director. I have extensive experience as a development producer and have taken ideas through from conception to broadcast. I’ve also done a little bit of TV presenting, briefly becoming known as “the Kenny of Science” and apparently achieving fame in Hungary for my daredevil antics with a scaffolding pole in BBC TWO”s “Science Shack”.

Local Councillor for Southwark Council (and “Education Spokesperson” for the Lib Dems for a couple of years of my four-year term on the council).

Constituency caseworker for Simon Hughes MP.

Counselor and Science Specialist at Camp Homeward Bound, a residential summer camp for homeless and disadvantaged children in Bear Mountain, New York.

Waiter at various restaurants ranging in style from fine dining to buffet (I have qualifications in “silver service” and “basic food hygiene”).

Chair of the Management Committee, Rockingham Estate Play Association (for 10 years) - a voluntary sector adventure play organisation. (I also spent a couple of summers working as a playworker).

Chair of Governors, Joseph Lancaster Primary School (the primary school which gave me a great start in life).

Volunteer - I have done long stints of volunteer work at various organisations, including Camino Seguro, a children’s charity in Guatemala and The Holy Cross Centre Trust, a charity based in King’s Cross supporting the homeless

Goat Herding - I once spent a summer herding goats in Bangladesh. It was fun and there was lots of time for peaceful contemplation.

I was born in Bangladesh, but mostly grew up in the Elephant & Castle. I can just about carry on a conversation in Spanish and can speak Sylheti, a Bangladeshi dialect, almost fluently. I make really good dal.
